Alida de Flamingh

Assistant Professor of Evolutionary Genomics

Alida de Flamingh is an Assistant Professor of Evolutionary Genomics in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Her research uses genomic data to understand how organisms have interacted with their environments over time and how they have responded to environmental and human-driven change. By studying the DNA of both ancient and modern organisms, she investigates the evolutionary processes that shape biodiversity across timescales. Her work combines molecular laboratory techniques with computational approaches to develop and apply new methods for analyzing genomic data. A central theme of her research is the recovery and analysis of DNA from challenging and degraded samples, including ancient remains, historical samples, and non-invasive materials. She uses these methods to explore the evolutionary history and conservation of threatened species, particularly African elephants and large carnivores. In addition to advancing genomic tools, her research draws on collaborative, community-engaged approaches that are both scientifically rigorous and also meaningful to the communities with whom she partners. De Flamingh holds an MSc in Zoology from the University of Pretoria, South Africa, a PhD in Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology from the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign (UIUC), and has an NSF-funded postdoctoral appointment in the Center for Indigenous Science at the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology. Outside of academic work, de Flamingh enjoys creating ceramics, traveling, hiking and trail running.
