EEB organizes a number of Outreach events every year, a few are listed below.
Darwin Day
Charles Darwin, best known for his contributions to the field of evolutionary biology, was born on February 12, 1809. EEB helps celebrate his birthday each February by sponsoring Darwin Day events on campus. Contact eeb@utk.edu to get involved!
Easy as Play, formerly Biology in a Box
Easy as Play (formerly Biology in a Box) was started by EEB’s Professor Susan Riechert to create a fun and challenging way for entire schools to enhance their life sciences curriculum at all grade levels, and to encourage student interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines. Easy as Play is directed by Dr. Liz Derrberry and Kachina Hickson. The program – which has served all counties in TN and outside of the state – employs a hands-on, inquiry-based approach to teach the wonders of the living world, as well as introducing the scientific methods and math skills we use to understand that world.
Rocky Top BioBlitz
Organized by EEB faculty member Dr. Kimberly Sheldon and Dr. Will Kuhn, Discover Life in America, Rocky Top Bioblitz (offered in 2018, 2019 and 2023) is an all day event designed to catalog and monitor all biodiversity on campus. A BioBlitz is an intensive survey of the variety of life in a defined area over a limited timeframe. Participants of a BioBlitz include students, scientists, naturalists, and members of the public. Help us document as many species as we can find on the University of Tennessee campus! This is a fun and easy way to learn about the flora and fauna of Rocky Top while contributing to our knowledge of local biodiversity. All observations from the BioBlitz are added to the Rocky Top Census of Life, aiming to document all species on the UTK campus over the long-term. You can also check out results from our Rocky Top BioBlitzes in 2018 and 2019.
