There were some amazing entries from EEB for the April 16-20 EUReCA (Exhibition of Undergraduate Research and Creative Achievement) event!
Congratulations to Samantha Cahill (Giam Lab) for winning an Arts & Sciences Award in EUReCA with her research Spatial Analysis of Mountaintop Mining’s Impact on Water Quality and Macroinvertebrates.
Honorable mention went to Alexis Case’s (Hughes Lab) research Post-fire ectomycorrhizal associations with Pinus sp. in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park: Year one.

EEB will host the annual EEB Awards Ceremony at 3pm on Monday, May 1, in SERF 307. Food and drink will be provided.
EEB will host the first EEB Graduation Ceremony in the same location, immediately following the Awards Ceremony, at 4pm. The ceremony will last approximately one hour, and Department Head Susan Kalisz will recognize each graduating student at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
EEB faculty and graduate students will attend so that parents of graduating students will have an opportunity to get to meet the instructors.

1) Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program
Students interested in pursuing research during the summer months may apply for funding through the Summer Undergraduate Research Internship Program. The summer internship program promotes research and creative activity among undergraduate students. All current full-time undergraduate students enrolled at the Knoxville campus are eligible to apply. Students graduating in May or August 2017 are not eligible. Over 40 students will be funded during summer 2017. The deadline to apply is February 12. http://ugresearch.utk.edu/summer-research-internships/
2) EURēCA – Exhibition of Research and Creative Achievement
Students who have conducted research under the guidance of a UT Faculty Mentor may enter this annual event that showcases research and creative activities by currently enrolled undergraduate students. Students may enter their research at the methodology, partial results, or complete research phase. Creative works are also accepted. Awards range from $100 to $400 and students may win multiple awards. The abstract submission deadline is March 11. http://eureca.utk.edu/
3) Undergraduate Research Symposium
The Undergraduate Research Students’ Association (URSA) will be hosting the Symposium, which provides a space for students to present their research to a general audience. The abstract submission deadline is February 26. http://ugresearch.utk.edu/activities/undergraduate-research-symposium/
4) The Undergraduate Awards
The Undergraduate Awards is a prestigious and international academic awards program, which is wholly pan-discipline. It aims to celebrate and support the world’s brightest and most innovative undergraduate students by recognizing their best coursework and projects. The 65th annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage is April 21 to 25, 2015. This event in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and nearby Gatlinburg features a variety of wildflower, fauna, and natural history walks, motorcades, photographic tours, art classes, and indoor seminars. Registration starts Feb. 14 and continues until April 11.

Last week, GREBE led the first annual graduate student retreat in the Smoky mountains. New and current students ventured up to the Biological Field Station for a weekend of games, hiking, campfires, and conversation. Gorgeous weather bolstered the weekend outdoors, with wildlife sitings ranging from a black widow spider and dobsonfly in the bathroom to hummingbirds and a green heron on our relaxing river trip. Can’t wait for next year!

US Army Forward Surgical Team Display

You are cordially invited to a special event showcasing the technology, advancement and flexibility of medicine in the military. From medical surgery and dental to health services and physical therapy, you’ll see first-hand what the military’s capabilities are in a variety of medical fields. The event will feature the Army’s Forward Surgical Team display—a field medical tent recreating an actual emergency/operating room, complete with military experts, showing the equipment used by first responders in deployed locations or during natural emergencies. Here’s your chance to learn more about the military’s capabilities and ask questions about how a medical or health-related education can lead to a military career as a physician, dentist, nurse or other medical professional. You can also learn about scholarship and loan repayment opportunities.
Health Fair for Students Considering Careers in the Health Professions

On Tuesday, October 15, UTK is hosting several admissions representatives from health professions schools. They are coming to campus to talk with pre-health students who are interested in their schools/programs. You can come to talk with the representatives in the University Center Ballroom any time between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. This will be a great opportunity for you to learn more about the schools, learn how you can become a more competitive applicant, and ask questions about the admissions process. The following programs will be represented: Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Physician Assistant, Optometry, Podiatry, Physical/Occupational Therapy, Clinical Laboratory Science, Graduate Health Sciences, and other allied health programs.

To help pre-med students increase their knowledge about their medical career options and prepare to overcome the admissions hurdles ahead, UTK’s Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor Society and Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions will hold a free Medical School Clinic Event on Tuesday, October 15th. The seminar will be from 4 pm to 5:30 pm in 223-224 University Center. At this free event, attendees will engage with and listen to a panel discussion on practicing medicine, careers in medicine, and applying to medical school. Pre-med students will benefit from the lively exchange between practicing doctors, med school admissions officers, and current med students. The panel members will provide an array of perspectives on the opportunities and the challenges specific to the medical field today. We will help attendees reduce anxiety about preparing for the MCAT and completing applications by increasing their knowledge about the admissions process. The panel will include representatives from University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Quillen College of Medicine and LMU-Debusk College of Osteopathic Medicine.
